January 2012 Fundamentals of Cake Decorating Classes

January classes are in full swing - in fact - we're 1/2 way through. The group has been great and show's amazing ability, even though all of them had very little experience prior to class. Check out the link to our photo album on the right hand side of this blog - you'll see the amazing work they're doing!

2012 Classes - Registration Open

It's been a while since my summer classes finished up and I've opted to leave the fall/winter holiday madness out of everything.

My next 4-week Fundamentals of Cake Decorating (beginners session) will start up in January. Please shoot me an email at BeTheIcingOnTheCake@gmail.com if you'd like to join in. It's been too long- make CAKE part of your New Year's Resolutions!

New Summer Class/Workshop Options!

Hi everyone!

Summer is here and I'm offering some different options to those interesting in learning or perfecting their cake skills.

Because there are all types of scheduling conflicts through the summer, I'm offering a few different one-night cake classes that I wanted to let you in on:

  • Mother/Father & Daughter/Son Classes: While my inclination was for Mother/Daughter classes, I realize that there may be more combinations than that that are interested. In this class, both you and your guest of choice can make a cake to take home. Class cost would be 2.25 hours in length and would cost $25 for each parent/child couple. Please keep in mind that these can be open to ANY age level, but will be from 7:00-:9:30ish PM.
  • General Workshop: These classes are for people with a basic understanding of cake decorating. There will be an open workshop with any offered instruction per individual that may be needed or wanted. The cakes, frosting, and ganache will be provided. Classes will be 2-2.5 hours and will cost $15 per individual.
  • Marshmellow Fondant Workshop: This class is a quick introduction to homemade fondant - which you'll be required to bring with you to class - EASY RECIPE provided. Class will last between 2-2.5 hours and will cost $15 per individual.
  • Basic Beginners Class: Perhaps you can't commit to taking a 4-week session of one of my traditional classes but want to get a basic introduction to cake decorating? This is perfect for you! Class will last between 2-2.5 hours and will cost $20 per person and cakes/buttercream frosting are provided.

I'm also considering some options for LDS Young Women groups or Relief Society groups - or any other group - so feel free to drop me a line if you have another proposition.

Fundamentals of Cake Decorating - May Classes

Shame on me for not posting in sooooo long!

We took the month of April off, as a result of the complications of Spring Break - but we're back in full force for May.

There may be one spot left for anyone that just decided they'd like to join us, and you're welcome to shoot me an email at BeTheIcingOnTheCake@gmail.com to get information on enrolling.

In May, classes are on Thursday nights, at 7:15pm, at the Provo Bakery.

Keep your eyes peeled for pictures and updates of our progress this month!

Fundamentals of Cake Decorating - Supply and Tool List

Here is a supply list that you'll need to start accumulating if you're planning on enrolling in an upcoming decorating session. The thinks listed (and pictured) below are things that you'd need to bring with you each week to class. I found that purchasing a large inexpensive tool box was the best way to keep my supplies together.

  • A long serrated knife (like a bread knife) as pictured here: http://bit.ly/gQ4aI9

  • A cake decorating spatula as pictured here - 10" -12" in length: http://bit.ly/gIxPYM (Available at Wal-Mart - you'll have the choice between an angled spatula and a flat spatula - my preference lies with flat - around $5-$6)

  • A small variety of cake decorating tips: a basic star tip, a basic petal tip, and a basic round tip (more info available if needed, please ask if you'd prefer tip size numbers) Standard decorator tips (Wilton brand) are numbered. There are 3 sets of 4 tips each, available at Wal-Mart that would be ideal for class. They are in the craft area with other cake decorating supplies. Please do NOT bring any plastic decorating tips.
Large Tip Set - tip #10, #12, #21, and #32
Small Tip Set - tip #3, #5, #16, #18
Flower Tip Set - tip #102, #104, #224, #252
  • Some sort of cake plate, stand, or pedestal, preferably one that spins, but anything will do for starters. (Wal-Mart carries a basic Wilton spinning cake stand that was around $15 if I remember correctly. Definitely a good investment in the long run)

Additionally there will be a few odds and ends you need from home each week - things like small mixing bowls, a hand towel, apron, small pointed scissors, and wax paper.
